  • Improved mood and well-being

  • Increasing immunity and defenses of the body

Essential oils are used in spa treatments in many different ways: they are added to massage oils, used in aromatic baths, sprayed into the air or applied to the skin. What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a method of using natural essential oils to improve physical and emotional well-being. These oils are extracted from various parts of plants: flowers, leaves, fruits, bark or roots.

People used plant aromas for healing a long, long time ago, in countries that no longer exist, such as ancient Egypt, China and India. But the word "aromatherapy" itself was invented not so long ago, only about 100 years ago. It was suggested by a French scientist named René-Maurice Gattefosse.

The principle of aromatherapy is based on the fact that the aromas of essential oils affect our body in two ways:

  1. Through the sense of smell: when we inhale fragrances, they stimulate olfactory receptors and directly affect the brain's limbic system, which is responsible for emotions and memory.
  2. Through the skin: when applied to the skin, essential oils are absorbed and enter the bloodstream, having a systemic effect on the body.

The concentration of essential oils in aromatherapy blends is usually 0.5-5%. For massage or application to the skin, they are diluted with base oils such as almond, coconut or jojoba oil in a ratio of 1 to 5 drops of essential oil per 5 ml (1 tsp) of base oil.

Aromatherapy can be used alone or in combination with other methods, such as massage or meditation. It can help relieve stress, improve sleep, relieve pain and even boost immunity. However, it is important to remember that aromatherapy is not a substitute for traditional treatment and it is worth consulting a specialist before using it.

Essential oils and their properties

Essential oils are fragrant substances found in various parts of plants. They are very concentrated and have a strong odor. Aromatherapy uses many different essential oils, each of which has its own unique properties and has a special effect on our well-being and health.

Here are a few examples of popular essential oils and their properties:

  1. Lavender oil: helps to relax, calms the nerves, improves sleep. It also has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, useful for burns, cuts and insect bites.
  2. Peppermint: refreshing, tonic, helps with headaches and nausea. It has a cooling effect, useful for muscle aches and spasms.
  3. Tea tree: strong antiseptic, helps fight infections and fungal diseases. Used to treat acne, cuts, burns and insect bites.
  4. Eucalyptus oil: eases breathing in colds and allergies, helps with coughs and runny nose. It has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
  5. Rosemary oil: stimulates mental activity, helps with mental fatigue and loss of concentration. It is also useful for improving blood circulation and relieving muscle pain.
  6. Ylang-ylang: has a calming and relaxing effect, helps with stress, anxiety and insomnia. It is also considered an aphrodisiac and is used in perfumery.

These and other essential oils are used in aromatherapy in many different ways: they can be added to aroma lamps, baths, massage blends, creams or lotions. But it is important to remember that essential oils are very concentrated and should not be applied to the skin in pure form. They are usually diluted with base oil in the proportion of 2-3 drops of essential oil per 5 ml (1 tsp) of base oil.

It is also important to keep in mind that some essential oils may cause allergic reactions or have contraindications. Therefore, it is better to consult an aromatherapy specialist or a doctor before using essential oils.

Aromatherapy for relaxation

In our hectic lives it is very important to be able to relax and relieve stress. And aromatherapy can help us with this! After all, some essential oils have an amazing ability to calm the nerves, relieve tension and create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

Here are a few essential oils that are particularly good for relaxation:

  • Lavender: this is probably the best known "relaxing" oil. It helps relieve anxiety, improves sleep and creates a sense of calm and serenity.
  • Ylang-ylang: this oil has an exotic floral aroma. It helps relieve emotional tension, calms and improves your mood.
  • Chamomile: Chamomile oil has a mild, soothing effect. It helps with insomnia, nervousness and anxiety.
  • Bergamot: this citrus oil has a bright, fresh aroma. It uplifts the mood, relieves stress and helps to fight fatigue.

To use these oils for relaxation, you can try different ways:

  1. Add 5-7 drops of essential oil to an aroma lamp or diffuser and fill the room with a pleasant, soothing aroma.
  2. Take a warm bath with 5-10 drops of essential oil dissolved in 1 tbsp. of milk or cream. This will help to relax the body and calm the nerves.
  3. Give a relaxing massage by adding 5-7 drops of essential oil to 10 ml of base oil (such as almond or coconut oil).
  4. Before bedtime, apply 1-2 drops of essential oil to your pillow or handkerchief. This will help you fall asleep more easily and improve the quality of your sleep.

The main thing is to choose high-quality, pure essential oils and not to overdo it with their quantity. And of course, it is important to take into account individual tolerance and allergic reactions. But in general, aromatherapy is a wonderful, natural way to relieve stress and relax after a hard day.

Aromatherapy for wellness

Essential oils are not only pleasant aromas, but also real natural healers. They have many useful properties that can help us to improve our health and cope with various ailments.

Some essential oils have anti-inflammatory properties. They help reduce pain, swelling and inflammation in the body. Such oils include, for example:

  • Eucalyptus oil
  • Tea tree oil
  • Chamomile oil
  • Lavender oil

Other essential oils are good antiseptics. They help fight harmful germs and prevent infections. These are, for example:

  • Tea tree oil
  • Lemon oil
  • Oregano oil
  • Clove oil

There are also oils that help to strengthen the immune system and boost the body's defenses. They stimulate the immune system and help us cope better with illness. Such oils include:

  • Lemon oil
  • Orange oil
  • Tea tree oil
  • Eucalyptus oil

To use essential oils for wellness, you can try different ways:

  1. Add a few drops of oil to an aroma lamp or diffuser and inhale the healing aromas.
  2. Massage with essential oils added to base oil (5-7 drops per 10 ml).
  3. Take baths with salt and essential oils (5-7 drops per 1 tbsp. of salt).
  4. Make inhalations for colds and respiratory diseases (1-2 drops of oil per 100 ml of hot water).

But it is important to remember that essential oils are not a substitute for medicines and are not a panacea for all diseases. In case of serious illnesses it is necessary to consult a doctor and follow his recommendations. And aromatherapy can be a good addition to the main treatment and help us to improve our health naturally.

Safety and contraindications

Essential oils are very concentrated substances that can be not only useful, but also dangerous if used incorrectly. Therefore, it is very important to observe safety rules and take into account possible contraindications.

First of all, you should use only high-quality, pure and natural essential oils. They should not contain synthetic additives, impurities or diluents. It is better to buy oils from trusted manufacturers and in specialized stores.

When using essential oils, it is important to observe the dosage. Usually only a few drops of oil are enough to achieve the desired effect. Exceeding the dosage may cause skin irritation, allergic reactions or even poisoning.

Essential oils should not be applied to the skin in their pure form. They must be diluted with a base oil (e.g. almond, coconut or jojoba) in the ratio of 2-3 drops of essential oil per 5 ml (1 tsp.) of base oil.

Some essential oils are not recommended for certain diseases or conditions. For example:

  • Basil, fennel, rosemary and sage oils are contraindicated in epilepsy.
  • Rosemary, sage and thyme oils should not be used for hypertension.
  • Basil, cedarwood, cypress, marjoram, myrtle, rosemary, sage and fennel oils are not recommended for pregnant women.

Essential oils can also cause individual intolerance or allergic reactions. Therefore, before using a new oil, you should perform a skin test: apply a drop of diluted oil on the inner surface of the wrist and wait 24 hours. If there is no redness, itching or irritation during this time, the oil can be used.

If any adverse reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing) occur, you should immediately stop using the oil and consult a doctor.
